Frozen Lake 03:51
3AM at the condemned cafe Filling out the empty chairs with people I pushed away Thumbing through the failures of my life I don't want to be the one who tries but never gets it right Even when the stars align I disconnect them every time I could have the wind at my back And find a way to catch the slack I arm the alarm in the attic The place I put my misery I need protection from myself Not anybody else Won't you please handcuff me? My karmic card's been canceled I've taken out too much luck without enough good deeds And you don't have to leave a light on I'm just gonna stay right here Let despair sing to me Even when the stars align I disconnect them every time I could have the wind at my back And find a way to catch the slack I can hardly see your face From underneath the frozen lake Funny it's a sunny day Still the ice won't melt away When I'm out to sea are you on the coast? Or when you think of me do you think of a ghost? There are no deadlines, no headlines in heaven We're all blissed out in boredom

Evil Twin 03:09
You know it’s awful when You wish you had an evil twin To take the fall for all your sins You’d never speak of them again I’m gonna lock my fears away I’m gonna ask hope on a date Tie her up in chains and throw her in the lake You know my baby’s blue Cause she no longer reads the news She just lays all day in bed Debating demons in her head I’m gonna cast my doubts aside I’m gonna take faith for my bride Hit her with a shovel and bury her alive Bury her alive When my heart begins to swell That’s how I know to run like… Run like hell (better run, better run) (better run, better run) I’d better run (better run, better run) I’d better run (better run) Better run, better run

Every little thing Seems to bring me down I’m just looking for A little more Than what’s around It’s awful and it’s true You can do what you wanna do I look underneath Every fallen leaf For a landmine I lose my beliefs Like I lose my sleep All the time All my starlit strategies Blow away with the morning breeze I’m at a loss for words Every syllable is coming out absurd I guess it’s normal to feel Everything is unreal Well lucky me I’ve got tied tongue No need to talk to anyone On a holiday from the human race Request amnesty for feeling strange I need to hear somebody say Something I can relate to I’m at a loss for words Every syllable is coming out absurd I guess it’s normal to feel Everything is unreal I’m at a loss for words Every syllable is coming out absurd I guess it’s normal to feel Everything is unreal Everything is unreal Everything is unreal Everything is unreal

I never thought I’d be here Dancing with you So near Oh I don’t mind If we are on drugs It doesn’t mean it’s not love I built my house On a bridge Over where the fault line lives Earthquake The wall starts to shake Creak, crack, and break Your life (your life) Has been adjusted By the bureau of reality For any (any little) Inconvenience We are so so sincerely sorry Drunk dial myself In the future 1-800-BLK-HOLE For the time warp operator As it rings What will I say? Will I be happy someday? Talk me down Tell me that I’m wrong Help me to figure it out I want to carry on Now I just don’t know how Your life Has been adjusted By the bureau of reality For any little Inconvenience We are so sincerely sorry It’s just the way it goes

Yolk of Love 02:38
Just because it’s held together by glue It doesn’t mean it’ll do So make the room just how you want it to be It doesn’t matter to me The yolk of love is running The yolk of love is running The yolk of love is running through my hands Even if I’m coming on too strong It doesn’t make me wrong And even if the crowd still cheers us on It doesn’t mean we’ve won The yolk of love is running The yolk of love is running The yolk of love is running through my hands I don’t think I’ll ever understand Just because it’s held together by glue It doesn’t mean it’ll do So make the room just how you want it to be It doesn’t matter to me The yolk of love is running The yolk of love keeps running The yolk of love is running through my hands I don’t think you’ll ever understand

Crown 03:46
So low my head So heavy this crown I cannot be your prince now I am rescinding my right to the throne So call off the band Stop the parade I do not care what's at stake Just let me be free You know I never asked to be king Tell me now what have I unleashed? There are no reins on the beast A hungry and wild thing Embrace famine, forfeit the feast Walk until I can hardly speak I've got to lead my own life Doesn't matter how high the price (Never gonna come down from here Never gonna look back in fear Never gonna change my mind Look at all of my time) Nervous tick talk fast Where is my last laugh? Broken words escape my breath As I erase my every step What have I done? Killed my kingdom Left it to burn Never to return I had to live like I was lost It never really mattered what it cost

Don’t laugh I want you to come over I want you to leave just when you arrive It’s not a contradiction, no It makes sense in my mind You gotta give me something Something to hang my ego on It can’t just lay here to decay here A fish in a dry pond How can I get stronger? I’m weightless, I’m a kite Tethered to some stranger How’ll I ever reach the Somehow I must of left the door open It must of been bangin’ in the breeze It must of been easy for you To rearrange everything What happened to my records? And why are my opinions in the yard? If you don’t like them you could ignore them like you did before How can I get stronger? I’m weightless, I’m a kite Tethered to some stranger I’ll never reach the You gotta gimme something You gotta gimme something, uh-huh For sale by owner Unused future hopes and dreams It’s a two for one special It’s the deal of the century It’s a two for one special It’s the deal of the century (deal of the century) Deal of the century (deal of the century) Deal of the century

Some people get in trouble For living in a bubble But tell me what is worse? I don’t even got a bubble to burst I’m getting further from the fairytale So forget the Bahamas Forget Bermuda too When they say life’s a beach I picture Normandy Yeah I’m I’m getting further from the fairytale I’m still trying to see A spirit in the machine That there’s more to me Than bolts and circuitry One day we’ll find out for sure I’m shaking in my boots don’t tell me you’re not scared anymore To the soldiers of fortune I wish somebody could’ve warned them It’s something I know well The road to paradise is paved through hell And I’m I’m getting further from the fairytale I’m still trying to see A spirit in the machine That there’s more to me Than bolts and circuitry One day we’ll find out for sure I’m still shaking in my boots don’t tell me you’re not scared anymore Shadows in the water deep Bayonets and rosaries There’s terror in the tenderness Of water rushing through my fingertips

Weeds 04:15
Everybody’s got Skeletons I can’t recall what I lost My head spins No vacancy No shelter to seek I’m still here In the weeds Are you as confused as me? There is something that You should know I’ve made good friends With the unknown In a matchstick urn A tiger’s tail, a two headed bird And a list of grievances I’m gonna burn There’s no way to tell you tell you How it’ll turn Everybody’s got Skeletons Oh I can’t recall what I lost My head spins No vacancy No shelter to seek I’m still here In the weeds Are you as confused as me? Are you as confused as me?

about

‘WEEDS’ is the long gestating follow up to The Creepy Crawlies debut jangle pop, twee, proto-punk and shoegaze tinged indie rock album ‘GET BURIED!’ (2012), an album of denial and duets between songwriter, guitarist and lead vocalist Chris Donlon and vocalist and keyboardist Kate Mclean that NO RIPCORD called “a cacophony of distortion, biting lyrics, witty considerations and personal angers which are delivered with genuine spirit”.

Now continuing the band as a solo endeavor, The Creepy Crawlies founding member Chris Donlon was in a time of transition when writing ‘WEEDS’ - “friends were moving away, a relationship was dissolving, and I was asking a lot of questions about who I was and what I should be doing while still processing the reverberations of a bout of depersonalization and derealization I suffered after my freshman year of college. I ended up performing and recording everything myself slowly over the course of many years, which felt appropriate for this album. I see it as a portrait of someone in a kind of self-imposed exile, lost in the thicket. It was written for anyone that’s ever felt a little alone, a little confused, and a little bit on shaky ground.”

So what is the sound of ‘WEEDS’? There’s twisty guitars tying knots around the warmth of a worn Wurlitzer. There’s sampled found sounds, self-harmony and kinetic motion. The sound of kids sledding down a hill opens “Frozen Lake”, kickstarting a joyous spiral into the depths of self sabotage: “even when the stars align / I disconnect them every time”. A midnight train whistle haunts the hook of “Evil Twin”, imbuing horror movie atmosphere to a psych-garage-pop tale of yearning for absolution through bifurcation: “you know it’s awful when / you wish you had an evil twin / to take the fall for all your sins”. Every Little Thing asks the question - what if you could dance to derealization? The turbulent subversive surf-rock by way of shoegaze journey of Further from the Fairytale takes off at the end with swirling sampled springs that feel like jet engines. On 'WEEDS' dreams are for sale. You drunk dial your future self. Kingdoms get burnt to the ground. And there’s jokes too: “When they say life’s a beach / I picture Normandy”. Ten years in the drifting, finished during the pandemic but not born of it, 'WEEDS' begins with self imposed isolation and ends with an outward plea: “are you as confused as me?”.

Chris Donlon has been writing and recording personal bedroom indie rock/pop/folk/punk for over a decade, largely in his home in Los Angeles. Before morphing into The Creepy Crawlies he released two albums as Chris & Mollie with drummer Mollie Hagar - ‘(take to the skies)’ and follow up ‘THE PALM TREE’, an album ALL MUSIC describes as “a feverish affair, moving confidently from blown lo-fi psychedelia to moments of itchy twee transcendence.”
